Another Christmas

Published by megapenguinx under Life, Random, School Edit This

Being the weirdo’s that we are Albert, Sam, and I purchased a “Mystery Box” off a website for $50. What happened then I can only describe as a retarded Christmas. We opened the box to find it full of the most random and useless things imaginable. Erasers-check, rubber ducks-check, air freshener-check. Seriously none of it made any sense, after we opened everything we looked at each other and started ROFL-ing. We were literally rolling around laughing our asses off that we bought something this stupid. Luckily, after some strange notes, we decided it was all ok and we would never buy anything like that ever again. Today however made up for yesterday’s strange box, we were given 5 computers to help in our persuit to build a media server. Lots of screwing and un-screwing and an almost accidental fire, we finally got the thing running. We trashed most of the other computers and put the pieces in one of the cases. The server has 512mb ram (the most we could get to put in there), 4 80gb hard drives, a Pentium 4 at 2.87 ghtz, and we added a few more fans and heat sinks in there to run things more cooly. Now all that’s left is to dump all the data into it, wish us luck.

Nerding

Published by megapenguinx under Life Edit This

So we’re back at school and I brought back an old PC we had lying around at my house in hope we could make something of it. Turns out it’s a pretty good little beast that just lacks some RAM. After adding a second hard drive we boot the little guy up. It already had Windows XP installed in the original hard drive, but for some reason it didn’t want to boot Ubuntu. Hopefully we are going to turn it into a server to host our bevy of movies. We are in a nerdy mood and are taking apart a bunch of things attempting to modify or repair them. Even as I type this I’m taking apart a floppy drive and trying to find a way to fix an original Xbox console. Yes we are truly nerds.

On another note, I may not be living in the dorms next year. But not entirely sure of that just yet, we shall soon see. So That’s about it later days and keep on reading.

Back to School Special

Published by megapenguinx under School Edit This

So here we go kids it’s time for College round 2, this Sunday I head back up to San Francisco to start spring semester as a sophomore. It’s a mix of excitement, stress, and fees! Sounds like a recipe for some good fun. Today was my last day with the Live Oak Track team, left those crazy kids with a good luck and see you next May. I might go out with the SFSU team, but only Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. That brings me to my next point: I have given myself a crazy schedule starting with a 9-7 Monday! Boy that will be fun. I cant wait to see all my friends, bug Albert, and be a college kid again. Things should start to pick up in the blog once I get back, seeing as it’s been slower than molasses when I’m in Morgan Hill. So who knows what the next 4 months will bring. Mystery, romance, comedy, drama, yep it’ll all be there folks! So stay tuned and we’ll see you all in the funny papers.

Hacked Hard

Published by megapenguinx under Life, Random Edit This

A few days ago all of my emails, my aim account, and my facebook and myspace accounts were hacked. Now after some juggling and redo-ing of passwords I have most of my things back to normal. This is mainly a post to warn all of you out there that think your imformation is secure online, it really isn’t. You should always have a back up plan in case it all breaks down like mine did. Unfortunately I didn’t and luckilly I didn’t get my identity stollen. However it very could have easilly have happened but thankfully the hackers were nice enough to just mess with my myspace and facebook for a while. So make sure you have a really good password, your accounts are not linked, and that you don’t give it out to anyone you don’t know. Sometimes it’s better that you don’t show up on the first page of google when you enter your name.

Picking up the pieces and putting them back together so later days.

Down With The Sickness

Published by megapenguinx under Life, Video Games Edit This

Sorry for not posting yesterday, I woke up not feeling too well. I was super worried it was E.Coli due to my love of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and the fact that several peanut butters had been infected. Luckily it was just food poisoning (hurray…..?) and after about a gallon of Pepto Bismal and some kind words from Marissa, I felt better.

But good news to everyone who picked up Rock Band 2 for the Wii! The music store is up and running, so go and download as many songs as you can fit in your 512mb memory. Actually I only managed to download 4 out of the 20 free songs before I ran our of memory blocks. I had to order a 2 gb SD card from Amazon (they are really cheap plus free shipping!) just to make sure I could still download more. I would get a bigger one except at the moment Nintendo doesn’t support cards bigger than that since you have to pay a royalty, so oh well maybe near when the DSi comes out there will be an update. So that’s about it, I go back to San Francisco in about 11 days (which I’m super excited about) and hopefully my Viewtiful Joe games and SD card come before then. Now time for me to watch the Bleach episode I missed, later days.

This is basically what I want to make

Published by megapenguinx under Life, Random, School Edit This

With computer generated images (CGI) rampant in most movies today and some movies being made entirely in CGI, it’s important when thinking of a new movie if it will be shot using this technique. Although CGI can be useful in shooting scenes that normally wouldn’t be possible it is important to use these types of shots in moderation. Too much CGI and your viewers may not feel the amount of immersion you want them too. If I were to make a film, I would only use the amount of CGI the film called for.
The film I hope to one day create is a superhero movie titled “Wireman©.” The film would not be based on any existing comic book, and would not be set in any established comic universe either. I realize that this has been done in films like “Unbreakable” and “Hancock,” but I have never seen them done in a way that they could exist as an ongoing story. They are either one shot films in which the story ends after the bad guy is caught, or they are not done well enough to continue with a sequel.
“Wireman” takes place in a city, much like other superhero movies, in a possible near decade. The government, bankrupt from both problems abroad and from it’s crumbling infrastructure, has become extremely weak and relies heavily on massive corporations to run things. Public institutions such as schools, hospitals, waste management, and even law enforcement are all privatized. People are heavily monitored and their movement is regulated. Each corporation has it’s own major city, where it’s workers live, with the higher paid employees living away from the wage slaves. The corporations make everything that the people in the city need and ration it out to the poorer masses, while the wealthy can have as much as they desire (for the right price of course). The movie begins with an alarm in the dark, we hear shuffling and a loud thud and the alarm is silenced. The scene would cut to a man in a shower with his back turned to the camera, then cut again to him leaving his building and opening a newspaper. On the front cover of the paper, it shows the faces of the latest people to go missing that week. All the while, the man’s back is always facing the camera. The man lives in the poor district of the city, and the camera pans out to show the slums where he lives. This scene would require heavy CGI to create a city in ruin, and a barren wasteland around it with a fade to black. The CGI in this scene, as with the rest of the movie has to look as realistic and believable as possible.
The next scene would have our person walking down a smoke filled alley at night, presumably on his way home. He is still with his back facing the camera as he disappears into the smoke. The camera does not follow and hear the sounds of a scuffle followed by a loud thud. Through out this entire opening, I envisioned a violin performing the score with the final note being right after the thud is heard. The screen would turn black again (not a fade, but rather instantly), and the title would be shown in white letters. Before this, no credits were being shown in the opening.
The following shot would be done with CGI, with us hearing muffled voices talking rapidly and becoming startled. The camera would go first person, with the man waking up and his eyes adjusting to the bright white light in his face. A loud beeping would be heard as he realizes he is in a metal tube and begins to panic. He is strapped down, but as he struggles his body begins to fall apart. He notices that he is a strange green color and his skin is metallic and hardly held together. His body completely falls to pieces, and gathers at the bottom of the tank as a puddle. The camera pulls out of first person and we see a man in a lab coat enter, look at the puddle of shimmering green metal, and declaring the experiment a failure. He orders the workers to incinerate the experiment and prepare the next subject, when the puddle starts to twitch. It slams against the glass, breaking it. It starts to attempt to rebuild itself into a humanoid form, but can only form a basic skeleton. Security is called in and as they fire upon the thing, it runs out of the room, and into the hall. There it sees more guards and slides into a pipe through a nozzle. We next see all the pipes leading outside and draining into a levee surrounding the poor district. The thing then falls into the levee and is seen swimming away like a snake. The animation of the thing would of course have to be in CGI, but the glass tube shattering would be done with other special effects, as would the first person view.
The rest of the film would be the standard, hero discovers his powers and has to cope with them and use them to defeat the enemy. The “thing” mentioned earlier will come to be known as Wireman, since he has found that the best way to keep his body together is through a mesh of wires. The character himself will take a lot of specialized graphical artists to make him and his movements realistic. With the advancement in digital effects this should be accomplished fairly easily in the near future. Unfortunately with all the special effects this film requires, I doubt I will be able to make it without a big Hollywood budget backing me up.

Side note: I own Wireman Films so don’t get any ideas!

Don’t sneeze at me

Published by megapenguinx under Video Games Edit This

Lately, through all my Rock Banding (Mustaches in December/The Baby Killers!) and Mario Kart-ing, I’ve been craving a straight single player game with a story and some good adventure. Unfortunately after looking through what games I had, I seemed to be severely lacking in that genre. Sure I had Kirby 64 and Mario 64 on my Wii, but they had been beaten a few times over (by they I mean Kirby, I can’t seem to get into this Mario game). Not even the first Halo was giving me the type of vibe I wanted (actually I’m not too big a fan of that game. I do think it is severely over hyped). So in desperation I went and downloaded Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past. Now don’t get me wrong, this is probably my favorite Zelda game probably because it’s the one I’ve gotten closest to beating but there’s more than that. Everything from the items, dungeons, and bosses have the perfect mix of usefulness, challenge, and awesomeness. However the last time I played this game was on my Gameboy Advanced, where I think it was better suited. It feels awkward playing on the Gamecube Controller and I refuse to shell out money for a Classic Controller until I absolutely have to. That being said, since LttP wasn’t enough I just ordered two of my favorite games from Amazon: Viewtiful Joe and Viewtiful Joe 2. I owned these on the Playstation 2 and absolutely loved them. The story was strange, the hero was great, and it was hard. I mean it, that game was difficult. Bosses would continuously beat you mercilessly even on some of the easier settings. And I was ok with that. I liked having a game that I couldn’t beat in an hour because it was too easy. So now here I am waiting until they hopefully arrive next week. If they take any longer I might have to get them sent up to me at school.

Rock Band 2, A review

I picked up Rock Band 2 for the Wii console because Harmonix promised it would have all the same features and functions as on the PS3 and Xbox 360. Harmonix delivered it seems, making a game that no Wii owner should be without. Before I begin I must make to quick comments: 1) I bought the first Rock Band full band kit because it was on sale for $90 and I could just pick up the individual game for $50. Thus I do not have the wireless drums or new guitar because I refuse to pay $190 for only slightly better instruments. 2) The music store still isn’t up so I can’t tell you how fast or slow downloads are…yet. Harmonix promised it would be up in “early ‘09″. Let’s just hope they deliver on their word. The first thing you’ll notice different about this and the original Wii Rock Band is that it logs you into the Nintendo Wifi Network on start up. This allows you to upload your scores to leader-boards automatically, and to play against other people online a lot more smoothly. All the modes are there including online World Tour mode, allowing you to team up with others online to complete the main career. There are several “challenge” set-lists you can do to unlock a few more bonus songs and more get added on with the more songs you download. There are also “Band Challenges”, these will come up randomly during the main career and will ask you to meet some requirement, either for fans or money or both. As of now there are weekly tournaments that will have requirements and you can take part in for the extra money. You can use money you earn to customize almost every aspect of your character. Overall this game is leaps and bounds over the original. If you own a Wii you owe it to yourself to pick this game up as a must own title.

I wonder

Published by megapenguinx under Life, Random Edit This

I wonder if you know? You might have figured it out by now, I’m sure someone has said something. If not then le sigh, I hate being direct. Although I don’t know how or what to tell you. Maybe I’m just bad it this, inexperience really. People would always tell me things, it was never the other way around. I also worry you do know but don’t want to say anything back for some bad reason. Put it on my list of irrational fears, always thinking the worst out of any situation. I just wish you acknowledge it if you do. It’s hard to tell, really it is. I wonder if you’ll even see this or if you even read my little notes I write on here (not all about you mind you). I guess I’ll keep wondering and hear the beep and get a little joy knowing that it’s you.

I think I died today

Published by megapenguinx under Life Edit This

The last time I had ever done a long distance work out had been sometime this month…….last year. So I wasn’t too surprised when I went to track practice today how out of shape I would be.  We (Nolan, Lisa, Trevor, and I) decided a 5 mile run would be a good easy, light workout. How wrong was I, about a quarter of the way in I knew I wouldn’t be able to make the whole thing so Lisa suggested we take an alternative shorter route. This new route would only be about 3-4 miles and we would all still end up in the same place. So I agreed and off we went. I couldn’t even handle that, and kept having to slow down and near the end walk for a bit. It was pretty embarrassing but it showed me at what level I was at and how out of shape I was. That was my first day at track practice, hopefully with some more training I can get back into some sort of shape before having to head back to school.

I’m almost done with all of Scrubs, which is cool because the new season starts tomorrow on ABC! Although I’m not a big fan of JD’s new beard. It just doesn’t look right, hopefully he’ll get rid of it soon. Well that’s it from the homestead, I’ll post something new tonight so keep an eye out for it.

Later Days
